Bacons Bridge Pig to close
The Summerville Plaza Piggly Wiggly is slated to close April 27.
The store is tucked into the curve where Carolina Avenue branches into Trolley Road and Bacons Bridge Road.
Spokesman Chris Ibsen said the store’s 20-year lease is expiring and the location hasn’t been profitable.
That location isn’t affiliated with Mr. K’s Piggly Wiggly, which has stores on Cedar Street and Central Avenue.
Forty-eight people work at the store, and the company is working with them on a case-by-case basis to find employment at other Piggly Wiggly locations, Ibsen said.
Monday, shoppers expressed shock that the store is closing. Large signs on the windows advertised 25 percent off, and customers said some of the departments already have bare shelves.
“I was like, ‘What in the world?” I was very surprised,” said Kari Morgan.
She doesn’t know where she’ll shop now; she’s always had a Piggly Wiggly within a half-mile of her house, she said.
She said employees were talking about a Harris Teeter taking over the location in about a year.
Harris Teeter confirmed to the Journal Scene Tuesday morning they had signed a lease for the property, but declined to offer any other information.
Shopper Janice Walker, too, was surprised. She said she’s gone to the Piggly Wiggly for specific items since she moved here in 2007.
“I was shocked. My neighbor told me this morning and I was absolutely shocked,” she said.
Harris Teeter also has a new store under construction near the entrance to Wescott Plantation on Dorchester Road.
