The Ashley Ridge baseball team claimed its third straight win Wednesday, a 10-0 victory over crosstown rival Fort Dorchester.
Sophomore pitcher John Sanchez threw a one-hitter as the Swamp Foxes (7-11, 3-4 in Region 8-AAAA) 10-runned the Patriots (8-10, 2-5) in six innings.
“John has been a little spark for us as of late,” Ashley Ridge coach BJ Bellush said. “He has been throwing the ball well.”
The win comes on the heels of a 2-1 victory over Bluffton Monday and a win in the Swamp Foxes’ final game of the Hanahan Invitational Tournament last week.
“Our whole team is starting to buy into the things we are emphasizing,” Bellush said. “They are starting to get the little things right and it has helped us go on a little roll. Hopefully we can stay on it and finish the season strong. We blew our first games against Bluffton and Colleton County. We made a lot of errors and gave up a lot of unearned runs. We have been working on cleaning that up and on attacking the baseball at the plate.”
Josh Litchfield led the Ashley Ridge batters against the Fort, going 3 for 4 at the plate with two RBIs and two doubles. Bradley McLaughlin was 1 for 3 with three RBIs.
Ashley Ridge scored a run in the first inning and took a 3-0 lead in the second. But the Swamp Foxes big inning was the fifth, when they pushed four runs across the plate. Bradley McLaughlin had the key hit for the Swamp Foxes, a bases-loaded double to center field to take the score to 6-0.
Ashley Ridge then scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth to end the game early.
The Swamp Foxes avenged an early-season loss to the Bobcats with its road victory earlier in the week. Junior Jason Miller earned the win on the mound to improve his pitching record to 2-3.
Both Swamp Fox runs came in the third and Ashley Ridge held the Bobcats to a single run in the fourth.
Sanchez was 2 for 3 at the plate and drove in both Swamp Fox runs. Rusty Grayson was also 2 for 3 for Ashley Ridge.
