Swamp Fox softball team beats rival
The Ashley Ridge softball team rode a strong performance by pitcher Kendall Zeski Wednesday to a 6-3 victory over crosstown rival Fort Dorchester.
“She came in in a tough spot and remained composed and got the job done,” Ashley Ridge coach Angi Brush said. “She didn’t fall behind on the count with many batters which is something we’ve been working on so I’m proud of her.”
The sophomore pitcher entered the game in relief in the bottom of the first inning with her team trailing 3-1 and two runners on base. Zeski got the next batter to groundout to end the inning and then only surrendered three hits and no runs over the next six innings. She didn’t surrender any base on balls, but did hit one batter while striking out two.
It wasn’t a bad outing for Patriot pitcher Mackenzie Broughton, who surrendered six hits and five base on balls while striking out three in seven innings in the circle. However the Swamp Fox hits were timely and errors were costly for the Patriots.
“Some days we come out and we hit the ball well and we place it well, but the next we won’t put anything in play,” Brush said. “We have been working a lot on ball placement so hopefully we will be more consistent at the plate the rest of the season.”
Ashley Ridge improved to 14-7 on the season with the win. The Swamp Foxes improved their Region 8-AAAA record to 4-3 which left them tied for second place in the region with Summerville at the end of play Wednesday. Bluffton holds the top spot. Fort Dorchester dropped to 7-14, 3-4.
First baseman Annika Ponton had the key hit for the Swamp Foxes, a triple that drove in two runs for a 3-3 score in the top of the fourth inning. Alyssa Atienza then put the ball in play to drive her in and put Ashley Ridge ahead.
The Swamp Foxes added two runs in the sixth when Nicki Young plated Sierra Robinette with a bunt single and Emily Hutt drove her in.
Early in the game, Fort Dorchester had all the momentum as the Patriots scored three runs off two hits and two Swamp Fox errors in the bottom of the first. Catcher Jessyca Calhoun singled to plate Ashley Rogers and outfielder Savannah Ferguson doubled to drive in Kaitlyn Kerley and Calhoun.
The Swamp Foxes other run was scored in the top of the first when Kayla Bass drove in Atienza with a sacrifice fly.
Robinette led the Swamp Fox batters, going 2 for 4 at the plate with a double and a run scored. Broughton was 2 for 3 at bat to lead the Patriots.
Ashley Ridge travels to Beaufort Friday and hosts Summerville Monday. Fort Dorchester travels to Colleton County Friday and hosts Bluffton Monday.
