Your vote could help a Summerville schoolteacher become a finalist for a national award.
Kathy Green, a fifth-grade teacher at Summerville Elementary School, is in the running for the for LIVE with Kelly and Michael's Top Teacher award. On Friday the hosts of the morning talk show, Kelly Ripa and Michael Strahan, announced Green was one of 12 semifinalists for the show's fourth annual Top Teacher Search contest.
Green was in the middle of a lesson when the announcement was made. School officials taped the portion of the show during which the semifinalists were named and surprised the teacher shortly after by playing the recording for her class. As Green's name was announced her students and students from surrounding classrooms who had been brought into the hallway outside Green's room for the surprise, joined together for a thunderous round of applause. Green had not been aware she was in the running.
“We should all be very proud of Mrs. Green,” SES Principal Lori Dibble told the students. “She is already a District Two Teacher of the Year and now she is being considered for a national award because of the work she does in this classroom.”
Five Top Teacher finalists will be chosen based on online voting, which began immediately after the announcement. Voting will continue through 5 p.m. April 15 and the five finalists will be announced on the show April 16.

Green was nominated for the contest by Kristin Schulz. Her daughter, Lydia, was in Green's fourth-grade class last year and is in her fifth-grade class this year.
Green is one of only two elementary school teachers to be named a semifinalist. The group also includes eight high school teachers, one junior high teacher and one middle school teacher.
