Thomas James Thirkell, Sr.

North Augusta, SC—Memorial Services for Mr. Thomas James Thirkell, Sr., 76, who entered into rest April 11, 2013, were conducted Sunday afternoon at 3 o’clock from St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church with Veterans Honors.  Father David F.O. Thompson officiating. Private family interment will be held in Summerville Cemetery, Summerville, SC.
Mr. Thirkell was a native of Braddock, PA, having made North Augusta his home for the past 12 years. He was a member of St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church. Mr. Thirkell served as Chief Petty Officer in the US Navy and was a Veteran of the Korean Conflict. He spent his professional career in the financial industry, where he worked for Bankers Trust of South Carolina, Bank of Bahrain & Kuwait and retired from Seminole Indian Casino as the Head of Systems Division. Mr. Thirkell was a loving husband, father and grandfather who enjoyed electronics, photography and spending time with his grandchildren. He was affectionately known as “Poppie.”
Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Annie Jean McClary Thirkell; a son and daughter-in-law, Tom and Teresa Thirkell, North Augusta, SC; two daughters and sons-in-law, Cathy and Rocky Strassberg, Dillon, CO and Sandy and Joey Zeller, North Augusta, SC; a brother and sister-in-law, Russell and Neusa Thirkell, North Augusta, SC; a sister, Joyce Delk, Summerville, SC; seven grandchildren, Kory Strassberg, Alex Thirkell, Katie Strassberg, David Thirkell, Katherine Zeller, Alexandra Zeller and Joseph Thirkell.
The family received friends in the Parish Hall following the service.
In Lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to St. Bartholomew’s Rectors Discretionary Fund, C//O St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church, 471 W. Martintown Road, North Augusta, SC 29841.
The family would like to thank the VA Medical Center CCU Staff for their kind and professional care.
