Lady Swamp Foxes shoot down Eagles
The Ashley Ridge girls’ soccer team is in the driver’s seat for Region 8-AAAA after earning a 3-2 victory over Beaufort Tuesday.
“Beaufort has been our toughest competition so I couldn’t be more proud of our girls,” Ashley Ridge coach Mark Weaver said. “Beaufort beat us twice last year and both of our games with them this year have been decided on penalty kicks so these two victories are sweet.”
The Swamp Foxes improved to 9-3 on the season and 6-0 in region play with the win, which left both Beaufort and Fort Dorchester holding a 4-3 region record entering play Friday. Ashley Ridge will claim at least a share of the region championship unless it loses all four of its remaining region games.
“The girls are extremely confident this year,” Weaver said. “They understand that if they go out and play their game, they can play with anybody and beat anybody.”
The Swamp Foxes scored first with a goal from Amelia Clower but Beaufort answered so the teams entered halftime in a 1-1 tie. The second half was all about defense but each team did manage to score a goal in the final 10 minutes of regulation. Sara Goodwin had the Ashley Ridge goal.
After two overtime periods the score was still knotted at 2-2 so the game was decided in a penalty-kick shootout that the Swamp Foxes won 3-2.
“It was a very tight game,” Weaver said. “Beaufort possessed very well but when we settled down we started to control the ball and move the ball. It’s amazing how much heart our girls played with tonight. You could tell they were getting tired but they sucked it up to hold Beaufort off the last few minutes of regulation and in overtime.”
Ashley Ridge had PKs from Carlie Blankenship, Goodwin and Taylor Johnson while Swamp Fox keeper Allyson Manns made an athletic save and Beaufort sailed two PKs over the top of the goal.
“Allyson has been amazing this year,” Weaver said. “She has stepped up and saved us in some big spots and she is just a freshman.”
Ashley Ridge hosts Summerville Friday. Next week the Swamp Foxes will travel to Colleton County (10-4, 4-4) Tuesday and host Bluffton (2-12, 1-5) Friday. Their final region game, at Fort Dorchester, has been postponed until April 30.
