Region 8-AAAA golf championship holds promise

  • Tuesday, April 23, 2013

Next week's Region 8-AAAA championship golf tournament at Legend Oaks could be one of the more competitive title matches in recent years.
Ashley Ridge and Summerville both have looked strong throughout the year and are hoping to make some noise when it counts most. During head-to-head matches this season the crosstown rivals have taken turns besting the other.
Fort Dorchester and Beaufort have also had some good performances this season so the 36-hole region championship tournament April 29 should be exciting.
On Thursday Summerville wrapped up its regular-season schedule by earning a 163-169 victory over Berkeley. Christian Woods shot a 38 to claim the low medalist honor.
On April 15, the Swamp Foxes claimed their second runner-up finish of the season at a major tournament at the Bengal Invitational hosted by Blythewood. The team was led by Austin Zoller who fired rounds of 70 and 69.  Zak Butt was close behind with rounds of 75 and 67.
Both players made the all-tournament team. Ashley Ridge shot a team total of 294 in the first round and a total of 289 in the second and lost to Boiling Springs High by two strokes.
Fort Dorchester's RJ Keur fired a pair of under-par rounds during the tournament to also make the all-tournament team.
The top four teams from the region championship will qualify for the Lower State Tournament that takes place at Sunset Country Club on May 6. The State Tournament will take place at Furman on May 13 and 14.
