Green Wave 10-runs Swamp Foxes
The Green Wave baseball team earned back-to-back wins last week to complete a clean sweep of its region.
Summerville (18-6, 10-0) followed an 11-1 win over Ashley Ridge (9-12, 5-5) Thursday with a 3-2 win over Bluffton Friday to remain perfect in region play. Despite clinching the top seed for Region 8-AAAA, the Wave will open the playoffs against a Top 10 team.
Summerville, which is unranked in the 4-A coaches poll released April 19, opens the playoffs at 7 p.m. Thursday by hosting Conway, the No. 6 team in the poll. The Tigers (16-7) are the third seed from Region 6-AAAA.
Against their crosstown rival, Summerville scored six runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to cut the game short due to the 10-run rule. Ashley Ridge tallied nine hits in the game, but didn’t capitalize while Summerville made the most of its 10 hits.
Freshman Sawyer Bridges had the win on the mound to improve his pitching record to 5-0 this season. He only surrendered three walks in four innings.
Billy Peatross relieved him in the top of the fifth and only surrendered one hit and one walk while striking out two in an inning of work.
Craig Lilienthal led the batters, going 3 for 4 at the plate with a double, two RBIs and two runs scored. Zach Mosay and Michael Powell both added two Summerville hits.
Josh Litchfield and John Sanchez were both 2 for 3 for Ashley Ridge while Jason Miller and Bradley McLaughlin both reached base in all three of their turns at bat.
Lilienthal had a base hit in the bottom of the first inning, stole second and scored off a TJ Hopkins single.
Summerville added a pair of runs in the second off singles by Peatross, Michael Powell and Devonte Base and a sacrifice fly by Johnston McCurry.
After a scoreless third, Ashley Ridge got on the board in the top of the fourth when Sanchez doubled and then scored on a single by Wesley Aschenbrenner.
In the bottom of the frame, the Wave added two runs. The first was scored when Ashley Ridge mishandled a double steal that allowed Matty Powell to cross. Then Lilienthal doubled to plate Base.
Summerville opened the bottom of the fifth by loading the bases off hits by Mosay and Michael Powell and a base on balls. Summerville then scored six runs off two walks, two errors, a sacrifice fly by Base and hits from Lilienthal and Mosay.
