The Pinewood Panthers finished as the runner-up at the SCISA state golf tournament April 22-23 in Myrtle Beach.
The Panthers shot a two-day total of 623 to finish 13 shots behind Hilton Head Christian, who won the tournament with a total of 610. The Panthers and the Eagles were tied after the first day at 312 each.
Pinewood was led by senior Richard Hubbard who shot a 4-under 68 on the opening day.  Katelyn Dambaugh finished with an 80 while Spencer Warner and Reona Hirai each added 82's to keep the Panthers in the running.
However the second day saw the Eagles post a 298 total to the Panthers’ 311 to ensure their margin of victory.
"We knew going in that Hilton Head Christian would be tough to beat,” Panthers coach Greg Baechtle commented. “They had beaten us four out of the five times we played them this year but we felt if we could produce some great golf we would have a chance.  In tough conditions on Monday we were able to stick with them but unfortunately we couldn't produce the scores we needed on Tuesday to beat them."
Richard Hubbard backed up his opening 68 with a second day score of 69 to capture the individual medalist title by 11 shots.
"Richard played absolutely outstanding both days," Baechtle said. "We have been going up to that course for five years and that was the best golf I have ever seen there by any player. Richard has been playing extremely well the past month or so and without his effort we may not have been able to hold onto second place."
Hubbard, who has played at Pinewood for five years, will be attending the University of Wisconsin next year on a golf scholarship.
Pinewood has won five state championships and has been state runners up three times in the past eight eight years.
Senior Katelyn Dambaugh shot 80-77 at the tournament. Junior Reona Hirai shot 82 both days,. Seventh-grader Spencer Warner shot 82-86. Freshman JR Stark had an 84 the opening day and Senior Jeff Chickarello had a second-day 83 to round out the team scoring.
Pinewood finished the season with a 22-6 record.
