Water Safety Day May 11 at Car Pros

  • Thursday, May 9, 2013

As spring temperatures approach and families begin to spend more time outdoors, in pools, spas, beaches and waterparks, Because of B.R.A.Y.D.E.N. would like to remind parents to do their part when it comes to water safety.

“As we patiently welcome spring, and eventually outdoor swimming temperatures, families will be beating boredom at waterparks, pools, lakes and beaches” said Michelle Zieg, co-founder of Because of B.R.A.Y.D.E.N. and mother to Brayden Zieg, who died of an accidental drowning in the families backyard unprotected pool. “Pools, beaches and waterparks always pose a risk, whether or not there are lifeguards on duty. Parents can do their part to prevent tragedy during the spring and summer months.”

Because of B.R.A.Y.D.E.N. would like to remind parents to be vigilant in these ways:

•            Become a Water Watcher – Make sure an adult is watching children in the pool at all times. Do not become distracted and never leave children unattended.
•            Wear life jackets and keep proper lifesaving devices nearby – When near the water, remind children and those with the inability to swim that they need to be wearing life jackets at all times.
•            Teach swimming and lifesaving skills – Make sure your children know how to swim, float, tread water and get in and out of the pool safely. Take classes in First Aid and CPR.  Early Spring is a good time to enroll in those lessons and classes.
•            Avoid dangerous drains – If you spot a loose, missing or broken drain cover, report it to the pool operator immediately. Tie up long hair or secure with a swim cap and warn children to stay away from drains or other openings.
