Pinewood’s Maryah Nasir became a state champion last weekend.
The seventh-grader won the AAA 3200-meter race at the SCISA Track and Field championships held at Porter-Gaud, finishing with an 11:15 time to set a new SCISA record for the event.
“Maryah ran a very smart and strategic race,” Pinewood coach Kelly Hazel said. “She ran behind the top Heathwood Hall runner until the last 800 (meters). She took the lead and never looked back.”
Nasir also placed sixth in the 1600 with a 5:34 time.
Junior Mason Hazel placed second in the 1600 with a time of 4:45.
“He was only four seconds behind the leader and ran a great race,” Hazel said.
Hazel also placed seventh in the 800 with a 2:12 time.
Junior Katie Smoak had a 95-foot, 9-inch discus throw to set a new school record and place third.
The Pinewood girls’ 4 x 800 relay team of Taylor Strickland, Seleste Franklin, Kasey Grossman and Isabelle Greenstreet ran to a fifth-place finish with a season best time of 11:15.
The Pinewood girls finished with 20 points to place eighth out of 14 scoring teams and the Pinewood boys finished with 8 points to place 10th out of 13 scoring teams.
Ashley Wilson Placed sixth in the girls’ Discus with an 81-06 mark and Zach Kanlic had a 105-01 mark in the boys’ discus.
