Patriots to hold skills competitions and inter-team scrimmage
Next week fans will have the chance to see how fast and how strong the 2013 Patriots' football team may be.
The Fort Dorchester football program will have its Spring Game at 7 p.m. May 21 at Bagwell Stadium. The event will include weight lifting, pass rush and 40-yard dash competitions. It will also include an inter-team scrimmage so the Spring Game offers fans some insight into what roles players may have with the team this fall.
Due to graduation, the Patriots are losing approximately 60 percent of their offensive starters, including their quarterback and both running backs. Spring practice, which opened May 1, is the first chance players have to compete for those positions.
“We have a good group of kids,” Fort Dorchester coach Steve LaPrad said. “They are very enthusiastic and practice has gone well. We have a bunch of work to do because we have to replace so many skills players, but its not like we didn't know that was coming so we were already trying to get some guys ready for those positions. We have a very talented group of players who will be juniors next season and I'm excited about some of the players who will move up to varsity. Our B-team was undefeated this season. We think we have some kids coming up from middle school who could also be contributors.”
For the first time, this year some of those middle school students will participate in the Spring Game.
The Patriots do have some key players returning. On defense, the front seven pretty much returns intact. The Fort also returns some offensive linemen and receivers with varsity experience, though its top receiver from last season is a senior.
