Del Webb residents Dan and Isabelle Oswald are more than “Just- Good -Enough”, they are wonderful! Ask the numerous people they have ministered to and all will agree. “Just- Good-Enough” also happens to be the name Dan chose to call their musical senior ministry group. The witty title was derived from how many times the group felt they needed to practice their music. Everyone believed that more was better however Dan jokingly voted that three times was just good enough to deliver their Christian message.
Their ministry originated in Philadelphia as a bible study group. Eventually music was added. Dan sang and played the saxophone, their daughter accompanied him on her flute and a piano and guitar player completed the bill. Isabelle introduced songs while delivering an inspirational message. The group was well received within their community and before long they were averaging twenty visits a month to senior centers throughout the city. As Dan so lovingly states, “Isabelle’s forte is her gift to connect to the people.” Through her banter, she becomes the glue between the “Just- Good- Enough” volunteers and the audience.
Soon Dan and Isabelle found themselves answering to another kind of calling, one that would require they leave the Philadelphia area. Before heading to Summerville, Dan and Isabelle made one final appearance with their “Just- Good-Enough” group. While at a nursing facility they met a couple who had recently brought their elderly mother there to live. As it turned out, the mother had resided in Summerville for several years. God sometimes works His messages in strange ways, Dan recalled.
As was in Philadelphia, today their appreciative fan base are the residents of assisted living homes, skilled care facilities, senior day care centers, independent living, veteran homes and churches. After seventeen year of spreading their message through music, their repertoire of songs has grown from twelve to over one hundred and thirty. Dan and Isabelle are quick to add that each song they play has a personal message. Many tunes are the favorites of their audience.
“Just-Good-Enough” currently visits around twelve senior facilities and churches within the Summerville and surrounding areas. Most performances are the result of word of mouth endorsements or through business card circulation. Dan and Isabelle are aware that not everyone is open to Christianity yet their music has been embraced by a vast cross section of denominations and cultures. While it is their purpose to deliver a message, they also get back so much more from the people they play for. Along with their reminder of faith and goodness, they also hope to bring laughter and joy to people’s lives. Music is universal and uplifting, in itself it is a form of bonding with others and as Dan says, “Old music evokes memories of the past.” It brings life back to patients. All of us have a story to tell; all of us have made a contribution to society.
“Just-Good-Enough” is comprised of a few good folks who reside at Del Webb Cane Bay and a few outside area folks as well. Current membership is made up of rotating individuals, with no commitment attached. The Oswalds are always looking for additional volunteers of all faiths, willing to bring peace and love to senior citizens via joyful music and inspirational messages; fine people who are just good enough to make a difference in someone’s life.
