Pinewood wins its first Sporting Clays Championship
Pinewood won its first SCISA Sporting Clays Championship this month at the Rocky Creek Sporting Clays Club in Richburg, S.C.
Run by the South Carolina Youth Shooting Foundation, the Rocky Creek tournament is for participants from public schools and SCISA schools as well as those representing 4-H clubs. It is the culmination of a season that has monthly sporting clays events starting in December and is the largest youth shooting event in the state’s history with 450 participants.
Three-person teams compete within age divisions at each meet. The players shoot 100 rounds each cumulative from 10 to 18 stations depending on the course. They shoot pairs of targets which can be individually going in any direction, at varying speeds with only one shotgun shell per target.
Pinewood’s Senior Advanced team members were Frank Haynes, Clae Wyckoff and Clayton Are. Conner Specht, Griffin Specht, and Chandler Whaley represented Pinewood on its first-year Intermediate team. Sonny Kay represented Pinewood as a single JV participant.
The Intermediate Team shot a different course than the JV and Varsity and placed fourth in its division. Kay had the highest score of the JV shooters who shot as individuals.
The JV and Varsity shot an 18-station course that was about two-miles long, wrapping around a lake and going through woods and fields with nice elevation changes. Each member of the varsity team shot a personal best by a good margin for a total score of 279. Haynes shot a 95, Wyckoff a 94 and Are, a first year shooter, a 90.
The Panthers Advanced team shot the morning rotation and its score held up through the afternoon rotation to earn Pinewood the SCISA Championship. Pinewood also garnered second place overall.
“It was a beautiful morning and all the stars lined up for three young men to shoot the best in their lives at the same time,” Pinewood coach Glen Haynes said, “It was something to watch. We had no idea we could win, we’ve never been in the Top 5. It just shows what can happen on any given day, never give up.”
