Water quality standards were met in Sullivan’s Island, according to the Charleston Water System’s 2012 annual report. In a letter to system customers, Greg Gress, the town’s water and sewer manager, said no violations were found in accordance of the Safe Drinking Water Act of 1996.
Every community is mandated by the act to pubicly provide annual water quality reports to customers. The reporting period was Jan. 1-Dec. 31, 2012.
Sullivan’s Island purchases water from the Charleston Water System, which treats its water from the Edisto River and Busy Park Reservoir. The latter is the primary source used by Charleston Water System.
In late 2003, the town received SCDHEC approval to being adding polyphosphate to its water supply to minimize discolored water, according to Gress’ letter. Polyphosphate is still being added today.
Also, about 1,000 feet of water main and service lines are replaced every year. To date, about 50,000 feet of water main and 18,000 feet of service lines have been replaced, the report stated. An additional 30,000 feet of water mains is still needed to be replaced.
Sullivan’s Island Water and Sewer Committee meets the first Monday of every month at 6 p.m. at Town Hall.
The Town of Sullivan’s Island will announce its selection of an architect for Town Hall design, June 3, during a special council meeting.
Council currently meets in a trailer behind the fire station. The new, permanent Town Hall building will be built in the same vicinity. A survey sent to town employees, together with community input, determined that was the best location.
The private residence at 1714 Middle Street and a complete renovation of the old Town Hall building, which was abandoned because of health risks, were options that were explored but later rejected.
Seven candidates responded to the town’s request for qualifications and three finalists were named: Creech & Associates Architectural Design, McMillan Pazdan Smith Architecture and Stubbs Muldrow Herin architects. All have local addresses, according to the receipt of candidate packages summary filed by the town.
