Green Wave softball team finishes season with No. 2 ranking
As expected, the Green Wave softball team finished the 2013 season highly ranked in the South Carolina Class AAAA Coaches Softball Poll.
The final softball poll of the year was recently released and 2013 State Champion Boiling Spirings is the top ranked Class AAAA for the state. Summerville, which fell to Boiling Springs in the championship series, is ranked second for the class. Byrnes is ranked third while Clover is ranked fourth and Bluffton finishes the season ranked fifth. Rounding out the Top 10 are Hillcrest, Wando, Blythewood, White Knoll and Carolina Forest, respectively.
Summerville should be a contender for a state championship next season as it only loses one player. Kayla Branton graduated Memorial Day weekend, but all 12 of the other varsity lettermen from the 2013 season should return next year. All of the team’s starters should return.
The bad news for Summerville fans is competition in Region 8-AAAA will likely be stiff next season. The region includes Bluffton, which split its region games with the Wave this year to grab Co-Region Champion honors. Summerville also split its region games with Fort Dorchester and Ashley Ridge this Spring.
Fort Dorchester graduated seven seniors from its team, but Ashley Ridge only lost four seniors. Both those teams are expected to have talent next season.
However, Summerville did play its best ball toward the end of the 2013 season and avenged all three of its losses in the region coming down the home stretch. The Wave should have good leadership next season as it stands to have four returning seniors and four returning juniors.
In the other classifications: DW Daniel and Union County took the top two spots in the Class AAA Softball Poll; Crescent and Waccamaw took the top spots for Class AA; and East Clarendon and Dixie took the top spots for Class A.
No Lowcountry teams finished the year ranked in the 3-A, 2-A or Single-A poll.
