Local sales tax option to go to voters
Dorchester County voters will get to vote in November on a referendum for a local sales tax designed to offset property taxes.
The Dorchester County Council approved a resolution Monday, calling for a local sales tax option referendum to go before voters November 5.
Seeing the sales tax option as an “effective measure to control and lower the property tax burden on citizens,” council members cited the money that is currently going to neighboring counties in the form of sales tax.
Tax paid at Azalea Square, goes directly to Berkeley County, for example.
The council noted that 65 percent of the sales tax currently paid by Dorchester County residents goes to Berkeley and Charleston counties to help offset property taxes.
The measure was passed unanimously. Councilman Larry Hargett was absent.
