Young athletes became acquainted with Swamp Fox Basketball this week.
The Ashley Ridge High School Boys’ Basketball team held its fifth annual Swishing at the Swamp Basketball Camp Monday through Thursday. Approximately 55 campers age 6 through 16 received tips from members of the AR coaching staff and Swamp Fox players, drilled and participated in scrimmages.
“Basically we want the kids who attend our camp to have a good time and to leave here on the last day of camp a better basketball player than they were on the first day,” Ashley Ridge coach Brian Welch said. “We also try to send them off with something they can work on at home that will help them improve.”
The staff teaches both basketball fundamentals and life lessons.
“We take the things we built our high school program on and apply them to the camp,” Welch said. “We try to lay the ground work for them by talking to them about the importance of being a good student and other things that can help them be successful whether it is on the basketball court or somewhere else. There are some kids here who would like to be a Swamp Fox in the future so we show them what it takes and what they may need to work on.”
The camp gives members of the high-school team a chance to step out of their routine and into the role of a coach and/or a referee.
“The camp is one of the highlights of their summer,” Welch said. “They are like heroes to some of these kids and it’s good for them to see that someone looks up to them. Luckily the players enjoy working with the kids because their help allows us to give all the campers plenty of individual attention.”
Each summer the camp runs from 9 a.m. until noon daily. For information on next year’s camp, contact Welch at 695-4900 Ext: 52188 or firstname.lastname@example.org or visit http://mens-basketball.ashleyridge.schoolfusion.us for a copy of a brochure.
