Robert Silgals, MD
Dr. Robert Silgals has cared for Lowcountry patients who have cancer and blood disorders for almost 29 years. Over the past decade, he has seen dramatic leaps of learning about what stimulates cancer to grow at the cellular level. “We’ve developed an array of targeted agents that actually attack the abnormalities in the tumor cell to try to turn them off and destroy them.” Targeted agents can be more effective than chemotherapy or radiotherapy with less impact on healthy cells. These agents have led to great strides in the treatment of breast cancer, lymphomas and chronic myeloid leukemia with hope for many other types of cancer on the horizon. “New drugs are being released almost on a monthly basis.” Dr. Silgals chose to specialize in oncology and hematology because it’s a high-tech field that allows him to interact directly with patients. “We have a relatively small office with a marvelous staff,” says Dr. Silgals of his practice, Carolina Cancer & Blood Care Specialists. Callout: “I think the patients really feel like they get personal care here.” - Robert Silgals, MD Medical School: University of Kentucky College of Medicine Residency: Medical College of Virginia Fellowship: The Lombardi Cancer Center at Georgetown University, medical oncology and hematology To make an appointment with Dr. Silgals, please call (843) 572-1212.
