Registration has started for the Summerville YMCA’s Youth Triathlon Training – geared towards local youth interested in getting ready to swim, bike and run at the Y’s annual Youth Triathlon.
The training program will begin July 9 and will run through Aug. 1. The 2013 Youth Triathlon is scheduled for Aug. 17 at The Ponds Farmhouse.
The training program will provide children ages 7-14 the opportunity to practice the three legs of the triathlon and the opportunity to be coached by seasoned triathletes and YMCA staff. Program participants will meet Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6-7:30 p.m. Fees for the training are $75 for Y members and $110 for potential members. The program fee includes the registration fee for the triathlon.
The YMCA Youth Triathlon kicks off at 7:30 a.m. with the swimming portion. The older age group (ages 11-14) swims eight lengths of the pool at The Ponds Farmhouse and the younger age group (ages 7-10) swims four lengths of the pool. The participants enter the water one at a time, at intervals of 10-15 seconds.
After finishing the swimming portion, participants exit the pool to the transition area. There they don their bike helmets, shirts, and shoes and begin the biking stage of the event. The older participants complete two 2.5-mile laps throughout The Ponds community and the younger participants complete one 2.5-mile lap.
The third and final leg of the event is the run. Older athletes run 1.0 mile on a trail throughout The Ponds nature conservancy and the younger athletes run a half-mile. All runners will finish at The Ponds Farmhouse.
The triathlon began with a brainstorm from Dr. Hal Hatchett who is a resident of The Ponds, an avid triathlete and Summerville podiatrist. In 2009, he approached Y officials to see if they would be interested in coordinating the event. Last year was the fourth year for the Youth Triathlon and approximately 230 children participated in the event.
