Summerville has cancelled its Independence Day fireworks celebration.
The town's parks and recreation department made the call this morning.
“We hate to have to do it,” said Parks Manager Doyle Best.
The town will reschedule the fireworks within the next six months, he said.
Although Thursday is supposed to be mostly dry, the conditions at Gahagan Sports Complex because of all the rain in the past week necessitated the cancellation, he said.
The fields are wet and soggy, he said; so much so that he's not sure the fireworks contractor's truck could make it in – and out – of the fireworks launch area, which is the lowest spot in the fields.
He was also concerned that attendees parked in the overflow area could get stuck in the mud.
Having people walking around the soaked fields would cause too much damage to the fields, he said.
Unfortunately, he said, the town had to look at the big picture.
Goose Creek has also cancelled its fireworks show.
