A Charleston Southern Basketball alum will be competing in one of the best professional leagues in the world next season. Former CSU standout Kelvin Martin has signed a contract to play for Arca Impressa Lucca in Italy's prestigious Lega Due Silver.
Martin, a 2012 Charleston Southern graduate who finished his career as the Bucs' 2nd leading rebounder and sixth highest scorer, will head to Tuscany to play for a Lucca team that finished 19-15 last season. The Adel, Ga. native makes the step up following an excellent rookie year which saw him average 15.4 points and 5.7 rebounds per game for the Matrixx Magixx in Holland.
Charleston Southern Head Coach Barclay Radebaugh was excited for Martin, who helped lay the foundation for the Bucs' success in recent seasons.
"We are thrilled for Kelvin," said Radebaugh. "He has worked extremely hard this summer here in Charleston and he deserves this opportunity. When you think of Charleston Southern Basketball and the great players that have come through here, he is at or near the top of that list. We believe that this is the next step in a long professional career and we know that he will represent himself and Charleston Southern University in a first class fashion."
Martin was the driving force in CSU's 19-12 2011-12 season, the program's first winning campaign in 16 years. He led a young Bucs team in scoring and paced the Big South in rebounding en route to earning a spot on the all-conference first team. Martin also collected Big South Defensive Player of the Year accolades for the second consecutive season, as he capped his career as the league's third all-time leading rebounder. As a versatile force, Martin became only the third player in Big South history to tally more than 1,000 points (1,483), 900 rebounds (968), 200 steals (222) and 100 blocks (123).
The Bucs win total increased in each of Martin's four seasons, leading to the Big South regular season championship and NIT berth CSU earned in 2012-13.
