A single out was the difference between a World Series appearance and heartbreak for a Summerville team.
The Parks Field American All-stars won five straight games in Clemson last week to advance to the championship series of the Dixie Youth Baseball South Carolina Majors Tournament.
Up 4-3 over Lake Marion in the final inning of its sixth game, Parks Field only needed an out to claim the state championship and advance to the Dixie Youth Baseball World Series. Unfortunately for the Summerville team, Lake Marion capitalized on two errors to score two runs and earn a 5-4 win.
That left Parks Field and Lake Marion as the only one-loss teams in the double-elimination tournament so they played again for the championship. Lake Marion jumped ahead 3-0 on a homerun, but Parks Field fought back to cut the lead to 2. However, Lake Marion doubled Parks Field’s run production the rest of the game to earn a 6-3 win and the berth to the World Series.
Infielder Ben Mitchum led the Parks Field batters in the tournament, finishing 18 for 20 at the plate. Several pitchers contributed to the team’s 5-2 run.
Other members of the team are Chase DuPree, Adam Jordan, Brodie Blanton, Chandler Burns, David Thorpe, Austin Little, Hayden Jackson, Matthew Tanner, Jordan Loving, Ethan Shaw and Collin Sumner. The team is coached by Mike Little, Ty DuPree and Myron Jordan.
