Officials with the Town of Summerville’s Junior Team Tennis program are making plans to expand.
For Junior Team Tennis each team plays boys’ singles, girls’ singles, boys’ doubles, girls’ doubles and mixed doubles in each match.†Emphasis is placed on fun, fitness and making friends during practice and match play.
The Town of Summerville JTT league plays at the Doty Street courts and currently fields teams in the 8U, 10U and 12U divisions but will add 14U and 18U teams for its next season.
The 8U and 10U divisions play on smaller courts with larger tennis balls and smaller rackets.
“This allows them to develop correct form, be successful and not be intimidated by the larger courts and faster balls,” instructor Kathy Peebles said.
Older players use regular courts with regular balls.
The Town’s junior league recently wrapped up its Spring/Summer season by sending teams to the Junior Team Tennis South Carolina Championships†held in Florence. Summerville’s Topspin Tornados won the 10U division and local teams also participated in 12U competition and 8U exhibition games.
Registration for the upcoming season will soon be available. Anyone interested should check with school websites or visit the www.summerville.sc.us.
