Only one-third of the 75 players on the roster for this year’s Green Wave varsity football team finished their summer at 100 percent.
The Green Wave football team wrapped up its summer workout program this month by presenting T-shirts to members of the 100 Percent Club.
“The 100 Percent Club is something we do to encourage players to participate in our summer workouts,” Comp McCurry, the team’s head weightlifting coach, said. “We like our players to get in 21 workouts during the summer so their conditioning is good for the season.”
Coaches for the team ask players to lift weights and participate in conditioning/agility drills three days a week during the summer. Players who miss less than four days are rewarded by being named to the 100 Percent Club. This year, approximately 25 players are in the club.
“It’s a good program and all the coaches helped us out with it this summer,” McCurry said. “That was huge having all of them on board. Seeing the coaches in there working out beside them means a lot to the players.”
Athletes who miss more than three days aren’t disciplined, but they do have to pass a conditioning test held the first week of summer practice. Players who don’t pass the test have to do conditioning drills at the end of practices throughout the camp.
