There were rough patches, but the Green Wave football team did all right in its first two scrimmages of the summer.
On. Aug. 9, Summerville hosted Orangeburg Wilkinson and came out on top 27-20. Summerville moved the ball in the scrimmage, but also allowed OW to do the same, particularly in the first half.
Rising sophomore Sawyer Bridges was Summerville’s quarterback for nearly the entire scrimmage. He completed more than 15 passes to eight different receivers, but did throw one interception.
Rising senior William Luck had three receptions in the game while rising seniors Sean Smith, Darin Smalls and Johnston McCurry as well as rising freshman Cameron Burnette had two catches each. Marquis Cheeseboro, David Coccoli and Chris Felder also had a reception.
Rising senior Jacerie Ponder handled most of the rushing for the Green Wave in the scrimmage.
It was a good outing for the Summerville special teams units. Johnston McCurry returned the opening kickoff 85-yards for a touchdown. Rising senior David Kennedy hit a pair of 27-yard field goals and three PATs. Summerville also blocked an OW PAT attempt.
Rising junior Matson Bryngelson recovered an OW fumble.
On Aug.13, Summerville hosted Manning and looked a little sharper as it came out on top 35-9. The Wave allowed Manning to return the opening kickoff 80 yards for a TD and struggled on its first few possessions. On its third possession, a high snap cost Summerville a safety as Manning took a 9-0 lead.
After that, Summerville took charge and didn’t yield another score.
Bridges was Summerville’s QB for two-plus quarters and completed 7 of 11 pass attempts, spreading the ball around to four receivers. He threw one interception.
Luck had three receptions for approximately 50 yards, including a 25-yard TD catch.
Ponder was the go-to running back in the first half, but Summerville used a handful of other athletes in the offensive backfield in the second half. Rising junior Darrell Ford and rising sophomore Quadray Poinsette both had multiple carries for the Wave.
Ponder scored a rushing TD from 3 yards out and Smalls broke off a 68-yard TD run.
Summerville also had a defensive TD and a special teams TD. Rising senior Tean Vecoate picked off a Manning pass and returned it 57 yards into the end zone and Coccoli returned a punt 57 yards for a TD.
In the second half, both rising sophomore Krishaon Jackson and rising junior Anthony Collins spent time at quarterback. Jackson only attempted one pass and did not complete it. Collins was 2 for 3 passing, completing passes to rising juniors Julian Gibbs and Parrish Clontz.
Kennedy didn’t dress out for the scrimmage so a JV player handled the kicking and made five PATs. Johnston McCurry handled the punting.
The Wave defense had a solid performance in the scrimmage, netting some 10 tackles for a loss, a sack, two interceptions and a fumble recovery. Linebacker Mac McCurry had the sack and rising senior Chad Wood had the fumble recovery. Smalls and rising senior Tean Becoate had the interceptions.
The remainder of Summerville’s scrimmages are on the road. The Wave travels to Colleton County Aug. 20 for a 5:30 p.m. scrimmage and then plays in the Sertoma Football Classic Aug. 23.
