Senior center seeks vendors, sale items
Dorchester Senior Center is now accepting vendor applications and donations of new or very gently used items, (no clothing please), for the 2013 Gift Show and Silent Auction.
Items may be dropped off at the Faith Sellers Center, 312 Laurel St., Summerville, Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Questions please call 871-5053.
SHS Navy JROTC parents night
Aug. 28 • 6:30-7:30 p.m.
Summerville High School Navy JROTC will hold its annual Parents Night in the school auditorium. All parents are invited to attend. Parents of first year Navy JROTC cadets are strongly encouraged to attend this very important meeting. The Navy Science Instructors Master Chief Carson Burgess and Master Chief Chris McCool will speak to the parents about the Navy JROTC program. The instructors will answer all of your questions at the end of the presentation.
Labor Day Closing
All Dorchester County Library facilities will be closed Monday, September 2nd for Labor Day. No fines will be charged for this day. No books will be due on the 2nd. Library branches will reopen Tuesday, September 3rd at their regularly scheduled time. Outside book drops will be open for returns. Please have a safe and enjoyable holiday weekend.
NAACP Freedom Fund Banquet
The Summerville Branch of the NAACP is hosting its first Freedom Fund Banquet at 6 p.m. Sept. 14. The banquet, called “If I Dare 2 Dream,” will include a silent auction, live music, and keynote speaker Rev. George E. McKain, II. Ann McGill and Raphael James will host. The event will be held in Doar Hall at St. Paul Episcopal Church, 316 West Carolina Ave. Tickets are $25 for adults and $12.50 for children 12 years old and younger.

Dorchester Shrine Club will hold it's Friday night Steak Night with a DJ for your dancing pleasure. The Shrine Club is located on Highway 61 (Beech Hill Rd.). Steaks, baked potato, vegetable and salad are available for purchase.
Broadway Music performance
Saturday, August 24 at 7:00 PM
Stallsville United Methodist Church will host "On Broadway Music" in the Fellowship Hall presented by the chancel choir under the direction of Richard Davis. Come reminisce this Era of Broadway music history. The performance is free to the public.
Women’s Conference planned
Baum Temple AME Zion Church presents its First Annual Women’s Conference “Reclaming, Resettting and Restoring our Health in Mind, Body and Spirit.”
Two events are planned.
A community health fair is planned for Sat. Aug. 24 at 10 a.m. The health fair includes blood pressure/sugar checks and presentations on health issues. The keynote speaker is Dr. Paula Orr of Charleston’s Women’s Wellness Clinic.
A healthy lunch will be provided.

Cross Country club
The Thunderbolts Youth Cross Country Club is hosting a free clinic for youth age 5-17 on Aug. 21-22 from 7-8 p.m. at the Newington Elementary playgrounds. More information about the youth program will be presented at the clinic.
Coastal Center Cup
The Parents and Guardians Association of the Coastal Center, an all volunteer 501(c)(3) non-profit established in 1982, will host its second annual Coastal Center Cup Golf Tournament at the Westcott Plantation Golf Club on Sept. 28. Tee time is 9 a.m. The registrtion fee is $75 per player or $300 per foursome and includes green fee, cart fee, bag valet, cart signs, scorecards, scoreboards and a Lowcountry shrimp boil immediately following the tournament. MEDcare Urgent Care has launched its 2013 Sports Physical Challenge, which will run through Aug. 31. Both MEDcare locations (8720 Dorchester Road, North Charleston and 1850 Sam Rittenberg Boulevard, Charleston) will offer students a sports physical for only $20 and $5 will be donated back to each school per sports physical to participating schools as designated by the student or parent. The school with the most sports physicals performed at MEDcare during this promotional period will receive an additional $500 donation.Both clinics are open every day from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
