It’s Oktoberfest time in Summerville as the Summerville Breakfast and Evening Rotary clubs gear up for a bash that will put the celebration on everyone’s must attend list.
While Germany’s Oktoberfest is a 16-day festival held annually beginning in mid- September through the first weekend in October, Summerville will cram 16 days worth of fun into it’s second annual one-day event.
This year’s Summerville Oktoberfest will be held September 21 from noon until 8 p.m. at the Golf Club at Wescott Plantation.
Oktoberfest will feature an authentic German food, a German Band, games and prizes for the eight-hour, day and night event.
“There will be something that will appeal to almost everybody,” said Rotarian Frank Dreyer who along with Alex Arntz is heading up the event once again this year.
During the day, Oktoberfest will feature family and child-friendly games, food and contests. Versatile Beats Productions will provide music throughout the day. A jump castle for the kids will be in along with a magic show and face painting.
By night, the band will crank up with German music by Hans Schmidt’s German Band.
The Best German Costume contest is bound to bring out the creative side for everyone. All are invited to “dress German.”
The Stein hoisting contest and barrel races cry out for teams to join the fun and a brat-eating contest is planned for late afternoon.
Food and drink will be available for purchase from local vendors.
And what Oktoberfest would be caught without beer. Craft and Oktoberfest beers will be sold along with other non-alcoholic drinks.
Buy tickets at the door -- an easy $5 for anyone over the age of 3. Souvenir mugs will be available for purchase.
