Ashley Ridge receiver Donavan Thompson is stepping out of the shadows.
Thompson split time between the Swamp Fox JV and varsity teams his freshman year. As a sophomore he joined the varsity fulltime and began getting starts. Last season he was the team’s third leading receiver, averaging more than 18 yards per catch.
However, Thompson’s achievements were sometimes overshadowed because he played on the same offense as standouts like Romelo Doctor, Vernon Moree, Seamus McKinney and his brother, Jacob Thompson.
This year, the receiver is hoping to play an even larger role.
“The last two years my role was more to do my part to help those guys but I think now my time has come,” he said. “I’m excited about the season and doing everything I can to help us win. My main goal this season is for us to finish with a winning record.”
Despite having its share of standout athletes, the Swamp Fox football team struggled last season and finished with a 4-8 record. Thompson is convinced this year’s team can do better.
“This team has a whole bunch of potential and everyone is one,” he said. “Last year, it felt kind of like everybody was separate and everybody wanted to do their own thing but this year it’s different.”
Thompson says this season the Swamp Fox team has strong leadership.
“Kendall Felder is a guy who no matter what, he has your back,” Thompson said. “If you need him, he’ll be there. Sean White is a guy who can push his teammates through anything. For me it is reassuring to have someone like Tyler Moss in front of me on the line. He is strong and I know he will open up holes.”
Thompson is hoping the work he and teammates put into the summer conditioning program will pay off this fall.
“Our conditioning this summer went great,” he said. “They changed our weight lifting program and our conditioning workouts were longer. I think we are faster and stronger than we were last year. That should make it easier to pull out some of those tight games. I know I’m more prepared so I’m sure everybody else is as well.”
