The Ashley Ridge football team matched Woodland’s production Friday but the Swamp Foxes also lost one of their key defensive players last week.
Ashley Ridge officials removed two players from the varsity team after they allegedly broke a team rule. One of them was a returning starter expected to do big things this season and the other player is a returning letterman who is also listed as a defensive player on the team’s preseason roster.
School officials referred questions about the matter to District Two spokesperson Pat Raynor who issued a press release stating, “On Aug. 20, there was an incident involving two students who were on the Ashley Ridge High School football team. As a result of the incident both young men were disciplined in accordance with district discipline policies and the student code of conduct. …  An incident report was filed with the Dorchester County Sheriff’s Department. The agency is currently conducting an investigation into the allegations in the report.”
Ashley Ridge fought Woodland to a 7-7 stalemate during a one-quarter scrimmage that was part of the Sertoma Football Classic held Aug. 22-23 at Johnson Hagood Stadium.
“I think we played with a lot of energy,” Ashley Ridge coach Kenny Walker said. “The question is can we maintain that energy for four quarters, not just one.”
On the first play of the scrimmage Woodland’s Roderick Britt picked off an Ashley Ridge pass and returned it to the Swamp Fox 8-yard line. Four plays later, Kenneth Mack rushed for a 2-yard touchdown. 81w added the PAT for a 7-0 Woodland lead.
Three punts followed but Ashley Ridge caught a break when the Woodland returner fumbled the third kick and the Swamp Foxes recovered.
Ashley Ridge capitalized the very next play, a 43-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Chandler Avenel to receiver Charles Fredrick. Matt Gable added the PAT for a 7-all tie.
Woodland hit three big passes and broke off a run for a big gain to drive all the way down to the Swamp Foxes 5 on their next possession. But defensive back Kendall Felder tackled a ball carrier in the backfield the next play. With little time remaining the Wolverines had to rush their final play and failed to score.
Ashley Ridge opens its regular season Friday at 7:30 by hosting Goose Creek.
