The Patriots shutout their opponent Friday night.
Fort Dorchester earned a 12-0 win over Stall during a one-quarter scrimmage that was part of the 43rd annual Sertoma Football Classic held at Johnson Hagood Stadium.
The Patriots sustained two scoring drives of approximately 50 yards and in large part kept the Stall offense in check.
“It’s hard to evaluate much in a quarter, but I was impressed with our play for that one quarter,” Fort Dorchester coach Steve LaPrad said. “If we continue to improve we should have a good squad.”
Senior linebacker David Govan burst through the Stall line for a sack on the first play of the scrimmage. After losing 16 yards on its first three plays, Stall punted the ball.
It didn’t take long for the Fort to cover the 47 yards to the end zone on its first possession. Senior quarterback Kobe Garrett ran for 8 yards and completed passes to Rashad Palmer and Corey Rawlings to take the ball to the 15-yard line. Senior Matt Murray covered the remainder of ground with a touchdown run.
Stall moved the ball some on its next possession, but then the Fort defense tightened up. The Warriors called a fake punt on fourth down, but defensive back D.J. Commodore sniffed it out and tackled the ball carrier short of the first-down marker.
After a nice run by Nahshon Cyrus and a first-down pass from Garrett to D’Monte Bailey, the Patriots scored on a 14-yard rush by Garrett. However, the Fort missed its second consecutive point after touchdown kick attempt.
After a sack by Govan and lineman Trent Barnes forced Stall to punt on its third possession, the Patriots again drove deep into Warrior territory. Colt Davis came in at quarterback for the drive and completed passes to Cameron Abell and Rawlings for big gains, but a Patriot fumble returned possession to Stall.
With little time remaining, the Warriors couldn’t break the big play they needed.
The Fort opens its regular season Friday by hosting Carolina Forest.
