Trojans poised to defend state title

Anthony Meyers, Jesse Turner, Greg Jones, Dionte Evans, Devontae Shepherd and Diamonte Evans are the seniors leading Cross in defense of their 2012 state title.

Cross has waited almost 10 months to defend its Class A Division II state championship.
The Trojans field the most potent backfield of any school at any classification in the state with the trio of All-State running backs in Devontae Shepherd and the Evans twins, Dionte and Diamonte.
“A lot of people expect us to return to Columbia,” said Cross Coach Shaun White. “A state championship is as much about luck as it is winning games.”
Shepherd and the Evans twins each posted 1,000-yard seasons either on the ground or combined offensive yardage in 2012 to lead Cross to a 14-2 record and the state championship. They anchor both the Cross offense and defense.
Under center, the Trojans turn to sophomore Jamar Matthews to direct the offense.
“Jamar Matthews has had an outstanding preseason,” said Wright.
Wright said his team is still a little behind on defense and working on communication from the sideline to the players on the field: “I like the focus of our players and we are looking to get better every day. We are starting to get in better shape but issues as usual are scary again this year.”
The coach will call on seniors Greg Jones, James Jackson, and Isiah Hampton, sophomores Malcom Garrett and Neil Davis in the trenches offensively and defensively.
Shepherd, Dionte Evans and Diamonte Evans also comprise the defensive backfield.
Cross added former Kingstree head coach Reginald Jamison who will handle defensive coordinator duties with Berkeley grad and former Arena Football League veteran Denario Smalls.
The Trojans began their season on Aug. 23 against Kingstree.
