Green Wave surges past Stags
In the end, Berkeley just couldn’t match the Green Wave’s impressive offensive arsenal.
Summerville traveled to Berkeley’s Bonner Stadium Friday and used an explosive and balanced attack to earn a 43-20 win over the Stags.
“We gave up a lot of yards but our defense held when it had to and we finished with more points which is the important thing,” Summerville coach John McKissick said. “Berkeley played us a good game but our offensive line gave our quarterback time to throw the ball and we made some exciting plays. Darin Smalls had a nice play as a receiver and returned a punt for a touchdown and David Coccoli had a big run for us.”
Summerville (2-0) only outgained Berkeley (0-2) in total offensive yards by a 353 to 326 margin but the Wave had more big plays. Summerville QB Sawyer Bridges completed 11 of 26 pass attempts for 174 yards and two TDs. The Wave rushed for 179 yards and a pair of scores.
Bridges opened the scoring with a 17-yard touchdown pass to tight end Sean Smith, who finished the evening with eight receptions for 67 yards. However, the extra-point play failed.
Berkeley then scored on a 55-yard TD run by Joseph Dress and took a 7-6 lead on Vance Bailey’s PAT kick.
After that, Summerville took charge. Key to the Wave’s surge were three plays that gained 206 yards and three scores.
Smalls had a 77-yard TD catch and a 76-yard punt return for a TD. David Coccoli ripped off a 55-yard TD run late in the game.
Berkeley intercepted a pass late in the second quarter, but Summerville held the Stags to a field goal on their ensuing drive and the Wave took a 26-10 lead into the half.
Berkeley’s Joshua Simmons cut the lead to 26-17 with a 12-yard TD run in the third quarter, but that was the last time Summerville would allow Berkeley to reach the end zone.
The Wave went on to add a 44-yard field goal by David Kennedy, Smalls’ 76-yard punt return and Coccoli’s 55-yard TD scamper while holding the Stags to only a field goal the rest of the game.
Tailback Jacerie Ponder led the Wave rushers with 86 yards and a touchdown on 22 carries. Coccoli finished with 75 rushing yards on seven carries.
This week, Summerville hosts Goose Creek at 7:30 p.m. Friday. The Gators will also carry a 2-0 record into the game.
