Wilson Hall showed no letdown following its huge opening week triumph over defending SCISA 3A champion Augusta Christian last week.
The Panthers traveled to Sumter Friday and found themselves playing against a strong Barons’ team. Although the Panthers team lost 60-7, they fought the whole way and didn't give up throughout the game.
The Barons offense scored on all six of its first half-possessions and before it knew it Pinewood found itself down 53-0 after two quarters. Wilson Hall then managed to score another touch down in the third quarter to go up 60-0.
Pinewood did not give up and in the fourth quarter junior Dexter Coaxum ran in from 1 yard out to score the Panthers’ only touch down of the evening. Senior kicker Kevin Weber scored the point after.
“We hung in there and I was proud of the team because we finished the game,” Pinewood coach Michael Wright said. “Every time Wilson Hall touched the ball they scored and despite that, the players got back up and tried to play. We tried different plays like running the ball and some short passes and made some good connections to Jimmy Thomas. Wilson Hall played well and with our five turnovers that didn’t help. We didn’t play as well as we have been practicing or execute the way I know we can in all areas of the field.”
With the loss, Pinewood moves to 0-2 on the season. The Panthers host Orangeburg Prep on Friday. The Indians go into the test with a record of 3-0. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
