Beyond the technical skill a surgeon requires, it's also critical for a surgeon to know the right time to operate, says Dr. Jeffrey Lafond of Tri-County Surgical Associates. Dr. Lafond has been operating at Trident and Summerville medical centers since 1995. As a general surgeon, he does a variety of procedures including amputations, the extraction of a many cancers and the removal of inflamed organs such as the appendix. Working the controls of the da Vinci robotic system, he can remove a gallbladder through a small surgical incision at the patient's navel, and he is the only doctor in the Lowcountry who performs the new “single site” procedure. “The robotic system is incredibly exciting because of the increased range of motion and enhanced visibility it provides the surgeon, as well as smaller surgical incisions and more rapid recovery for patients.”
