The state Board of Education unanimously approved Dorchester District Two’s waiver from State and Federal Accountability requirements to clear the way for the district to pilot the innovative ACT assessment system.
State Superintendent of Education Dr. Mick Zais has submitted a letter in support of the district’s waiver to the U.S. Department of Education.
Superintendent of Schools Joe Pye and Assistant Superintendent Sean Alford attended the BOE meeting in Columbia Wednesday.
According to Alford, “The feds are supportive of innovative districts” so this should pass muster at the federal level.
“Dorchester School District Two has requested an exemption from current state and federal accountability requirements to employ an innovative, actionable assessment system designed to monitor individual student progress toward empirical benchmarks of college and career readiness,” says Alford. 
“It will now extend the district’s partnership with ACT to employ a Grade 3-12 assessment system that is aligned to Common Core State Standards, ACT College and Career Readiness Standards, National Career Readiness Certificate Standards, and national business and industry standards. 
“Feedback from the proposed assessment system will allow students to address academic weaknesses early, increasing their chances of being ready for college and work by the time they graduate. Moreover, the assessment system will provide information students can use to identify and explore prospective careers early in their high school experience.”
