Wise Words from Williams: Learning from your mistakes

  • Wednesday, September 18, 2013

The little boy was watching a movie for the third time that day. It was one of those long hazy days of summer with nothing better to do.
One of the characters was getting away from the men who were chasing him. The little boy sat on the edge of his seat wondering what would happen this time.
To his amazement the same thing that happened the first two times is exactly what happened again.
At his age he was too young to comprehend it all. With frustration in his voice he said to his dad, “Daddy, this is the third time I am seeing this movie and every time the horse steps into the hole and the man falls off. You would think that the horse knows that the hole is there by now.”
Like the youngster who didn’t understand the concept of a movie, when you watch certain people’s lives it’s as if it is a movie because they keep stepping into the same hole again and again. They keep making the same mistake.
They never seem to learn.
How about you? Do you learn from your mistakes or do you find yourself making the same mistakes again and again?
Learning from your mistakes is important if you are going to really grow up and get ahead.
Be big enough to admit mistakes when you make them. There are some people who will spend an enormous amount of time denying them, explaining them away, ignoring them and everything else they can do but admitting them.
Admitting your mistakes takes humility. It is often said that, “It takes a big man to say I am sorry.” It is hard for some people to say “I am sorry” because when you say you are sorry often times it means you made a mistake.
To get beyond your mistakes you must also be smart enough to profit from them. In other words it is one thing to admit that you made a mistake, it’s quite another thing to determine why.
If you cannot unravel why you made the mistake you made, it is quite likely you will make that mistake again.
Be strong enough to correct your mistakes.
As important as knowing why you made a mistake might be, it is just as important for you to be able to take corrective actions, otherwise you will remain the same. You would be like the man who went on vacation and bought a really expensive camera, took many great pictures but failed to develop any of them after he got home.
It takes emotional maturity among other things to make changes in your life. But it is worth it. If you keep on doing what you have always done you will keep getting the same results.
