‘Tear down this mall!’

  • Tuesday, September 24, 2013

Dear Editor,
With apologies to Ronald Reagan, MR. MAYOR TEAR DOWN THIS MALL!!!
Like everyone else in Summerville, I was pleased to see the SOLD sign in front of that architectural oxymoron known as Heritage Square. Visions of bulldozers knocking down this monstrosity and its wasteland of pavement danced through my head. I was even saving money to pay for a chance to drive the bulldozer.
Alas, it's all a cruel hoax. We are supposed to believe that the existing structure will be renovated into a viable gun shop and pistol range. Really? Really???
I certainly believe in The Resurrection, but some things are best left dead.
Unfortunately, Heritage Square will come back like a vampire - a caricature of its former self, devoid of any redeeming social or architectural value.
If ever a vampire deserved a silver bullet, this is it. This collection of ugliness sucks the life out of a part Summerville that should be a major gateway to the city.
Maybe Eminent Domain is out of the question. But someone PLEASE find a way to stop this total waste of money, time, and energy so that something viable can be built on the site. Please?

Regards,

Randy Guy, Architect
