Green Wave volleyball team gets mixed results
The Summerville volleyball team notched a win over Stratford Thursday.
The Green Wave defeated the Knights 25-10, 25-19, but then fell 25-14, 25-19 to Fort Dorchester. Summerville entered play this week with a 3-6 record and is still seeking its first Region 8-AAAA victory.
“We’ve had a couple of injuries we are trying to come through and we have to find a killer, someone who can really put the ball away,” first-year Summerville coach Rachel Page said after the tri-match. “Actually we have some players capable of that we just need them to come to life. We have the defense and showed some of that tonight.”
Seniors Zuri Green and Jaden Cook and junior Danielle Halajcsik led the Summerville scorers against the Knights. All three made multiple kills and scored at the service line.
Green and freshman Mackenzie Schmoltz had a strong night at the net defensively and the Wave back line did well in the Stratford match.
Page is hoping injuries wont be as problematic during the second half of the season and that the team can work out the kinks preventing its offense from being more productive.
“With the help of the two new coaches who came on this year I feel we will be able to continue building,” Page said. “Jeff Totten is doing a good job with our JV team and really helping the varsity out at practices. Amy Nokes, who played at CSU and overseas for a while, brought us new drills and is helping keep everything fresh. We still have a lot of region games ahead of us so we will keep working.”
Summerville travels to Bluffton Thursday and hosts Colleton County Oct. 8.
