Music Club to feature music therapist
The Summerville Music Club will meet Tuesday October 15, 2013 in the Creative Arts Center in the Village at Summerville at 6:30 pm featuring Claire Littlejohn. Littlejohn is a Board Certified-Music Therapist and has worked as Coordinator of Music Therapy for Trident Health since August 2009. Claire holds a Bachelors Degree in Music Therapy from Appalachian State University, and has advanced training in Neonatal Intensive Care – Music Therapy and Neurologic Music Therapy. Claire works with a variety of populations within the general medical setting, but holds primary focus in oncology, ortho/neuro, and neonatal intensive care. In August 2012, Claire became an AMTA certified Clinical Training Director and currently supervises four music therapy interns a year at Trident Health.
The program is open to the public and is free. Donations will be accepted for the club’s scholarship fund.
OMS kicks of Walk-to-School week
The first National Walk to School Day of this year – coordinated by Saferoutes – is October 9.
Oakbrook Middle School students and teachers will be meeting in two separate locations in order to walk together to school.
The locations are:
5020 Thornton Drive, Summerville SC 29485 at 7:45 a.m.The crosswalk in front of OMS/OES on Parlor Drive, 7:45-8:10 a.m. This is the OMS Weekly Walk-to-School kick-off. Beginning October 18, OMS students and teachers will meet in the same locations on Fridays to support healthy habits by walking to school together.
2013 Tri-county “Walk a Mile in Her Shoes”
My Sister’s House is hosting the 2013 “Walk a Mile in Her Shoes,” an international event where men walk in women’s high heeled shoes to protest sexualized and domestic violence. In addition, the event will raise money for My Sister’s House, a local nonprofit organization that provides services for women and children who have been victims of domestic violence, and their new shelter. It will be held at the Park Circle Community Center in North Charleston on Oct. 5 from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. Tickets are $25.
Teen Confidential Fall Workshop 2013
In an effort to help teens become more self-confident, the Charleston School of Protocol and Etiquette, Inc. is offering Teen Confidential Fall Workshop, October 19, 2013 to December14, 2013, meeting each Saturday. The program is presented at the Daniel Island Country Club on Daniel Island, South Carolina.
This 8 week finishing school program will help young men and women, ages 14-17, achieve important life skills. Each week sessions include: topics of discussion such as leadership, self confidence, attitude, respecting yourself, poise and more. There are also image and etiquette lessons ranging from your overall image, presenting yourself with confidence, introducing yourself and others, handshaking, posture, dining etiquette, interview etiquette, dating etiquette and much more.
The enrollment fee includes the program, supplies, speakers, handouts and graduation dinner.

Library Closing Oct. 11th
Dorchester County Library’s St. George and Summerville facilities will be closed Friday, October 11th for Staff Development Day. Book drops will be open at both locations for patrons to use. Our libraries will reopen Saturday, October 12th at 9:30 am.
The Summerville Family YMCA has opened registration for its Co-Ed Youth (ages 5-15) Flag Football program. Registration is available at any YMCA location or online (www.summervilleymca.org) through Oct. 28. The fee is $40 for Y members or $80 for potential members. Practices begin Nov. 25 and the season runs Dec. 7 through Feb. 8. Most games are played on Saturdays but each team will have at least one week-night game.
