Silver Haired Legislature's Annual Meeting

SUMMERVILLE...  Tauna Longest; Dementia Dialogues Instructor, USC, Arnold School of Health and Dementia Specialist with AllCare Living Services, Inc., was asked to be a guest speaker at the annual South Carolina Silver Haired Legislative Session.  The presentation was held on September 12, 2013 and was the 15th Annual Legislative Session held in the House Chambers at the State House.
Tauna spoke about the facts and figures regarding Alzheimer's Disease, the impact and financial burden Alzheimer's Disease is having on our country, the visual difference between a brain with Alzheimer's Disease and one without Alzheimer's, the "Bill of Rights" that a caregiver has, tips on how to be a "Better" caregiver, and how to communicate with someone suffering from Alzheimer's Disease.  She also shared some "Magic Words" and "Phrases" to use when caring for someone with Alzheimer's Disease.                 
The South Carolina Silver Haired Legislature was created in 1999 by the South Carolina General Assembly and signed into law by Governor James H. Hodges. They held their first organizational session at the Capital Senior Center in Columbia, SC on July 14, 1999. The South Carolina Silver Haired Legislature meets every September in legislative session to formulate the resolutions that will be presented to the South Carolina General Assembly the following January.
When the South Carolina Silver Haired Legislature assembly is not in session, governance is by the Board of Directors; a twenty six member group that includes the officers, the caucus chairs, and one additional member from each caucus.
The South Carolina Silver Haired Legislature was created to;  identify issues, concerns and possible solutions for problems facing the aging population in South Carolina,  make recommendations to the Governor, General Assembly, and various Departments and Agencies on Aging, arrange for and participate in educational forums to explore issues related to older South Carolinians, promote good government for all South Carolinians, carry out all purposes and activities on a nonpartisan basis and conduct general assembly sessions annually in the State Capitol.
