Summerville Police responded October 2, to a shoplifting call at Walmart. Police were advised there were multiple shoplifters

Alfred Eugene Slaughter, 39, of Summerville and Zechariah Barkley Gibbs, 22, of Johns Island, were seen exiting the store. According to the incident report, police were provided with the names and descriptions of the two by Walmart loss prevention personnel. The officers were advised the subjects were seen fleeing the scene in a gold Expedition, driving south in the northbound North Main Street lane. They were seen turning into China Town at 1206 North Main Street.

Police located the empty vehicle parked behind China Town.

Police were advised that a black male wearing a white shirt and tan pants was seen exiting the vehicle and walking toward Movies 16 at 215 Azalea Square.

Police set up a perimeter. They were told by subjects in the area that Slaughter was seen inside the movie theater on his cell phone.

A K-9 unit arrived and began tracking him.

Police cleared the movie theater unable to locate Slaughter. However, after reviewing surveillance video, they discovered Slaughter was hiding in the ceiling tile in the bathroom. They were able to arrest Slaughter for shoplifting.

While the search for Slaughter was ongoing, another officer made contact with Gibbs who had the stolen items - three fishing poles - in his hand when the officer saw him. Gibbs was arrested for shoplifting and the items returned to Walmart.

The two were booked at SPD and transported to Berkeley County Detention Center. The vehicle was towed from China Town. Inside the vehicle were several more items from Walmart.
