Young Green Wave team pulls out of lull
The Lady Green Wave tennis team notched consecutive shutouts last week to pull itself out of a slump.
Summerville opened the season with four consecutive wins, but then lost seven straight including four region matches. After falling to Ashley Ridge earlier in the week, the team knew it had to get back on track soon or its playoff hopes would diminish.
The Green Wave responded by earning a 7-0 win over Stratford Oct. 2 and a 6-0 victory over rival Fort Dorchester Oct. 3. Summerville entered play this week with a 6-7 record and a 1-4 mark in region play.
“We faced some stiff competition recently, playing Berkeley as well as some quality teams during a tournament in Mt. Pleasant,” first-year Summerville coach David Long said. “Our region is strong but we are still fighting to get a spot in the playoffs. I’m very excited about the future for this team. We put a lot of young players on the court and they are doing well and improving.”
The Summerville team features six returning players. Mirendra Scott is the sole senior on the team. The other returners are juniors Ryleigh Campbell, Madison McClain and Sierra Simmons and sophomores Kitty Green and Harper Mobley.
First-year players on this year’s Green Wave team are sophomore Lunden Hancock and seventh-graders Dylan Zoeller, Lizzie Naval, Paige Reynolds, Sophie Shelbourne and Sullivan Long.
Last week’s starting lineup featured three sophomores and three seventh graders. With Long’s guidance, those young players stand to develop a lot over the next few years.
Long brings several years of tennis experience to the position. In 2009 he led the Topsail High School girls to an impressive 2A state playoff run and he was once himself an individual state finalist. Also an assistant coach for the Green Wave boys’ basketball team, Long carries a 4.5 USTA rating and brings a basketball mentality to the tennis program.
Former Green Wave tennis coach Marquel Collins-Gray, who ran the boys’ and girls’ teams the past three years before taking an instructor position on Kiawa Island, is also still involved with the Summerville team as a teaching pro.
