YMCA Celebrates Membership Appreciation In Honor Of Breast Cancer Awareness
Each October, the Summerville Family YMCA honors survivors and those who have lost their lives to breast cancer at their monthly membership appreciation days.
This year marks the third year that Sandy Ringler, YMCA staff member, has put on this day as a way to help the community be more involved and more aware of breast cancer.
“I am a survivor. My job is to share my story and help others be aware of the early signs of breast cancer,” Ringler states.
Ringler put together an array of booths from local community businesses at the Downtown YMCA location, from 9 A.M. to noon. Over 300 YMCA members that walk into the facility every day were informed about breast cancer awareness.
Trident Medical Center partnered with Susan B. Komen to educate members on life saving procedures to detect breast cancer, H2U informed members of healthy eating habits to rid away cancer, Coca-Cola provided pink Vitamin Water, CVS administered flu shots, and Coscto served light snacks at the event.
“When I think of survivor I think of eight powerful words,” Ringler states,” Strength, Undefeated, Relentless, Vibrant, Inspiring, Vliant, Optimistic, and Radiant.”
This is a big year for Ringler as she is a 25 year cancer survivor and will be celebrating her 70th birthday in December.
