Dales, Richard Lemont

Richard Lemont Dales, MD, 67, of Southern Pines, NC passed away on October 6, 2013 at Fox Hollow Senior Living Community from complications of Parkinson’s Disease.

Richard was born on July 16, 1947 in Columbia, SC to Lt. Col. (RET) Robert E. Dales and Edna Stork Dales.

Richard had many accomplishments throughout his life. He graduated from Summerville High School in SC in 1964. After graduation he attended Clemson University where he obtained a Bachelor of Science Degree in 1968 and a Master’s Degree in Zoology in 1972. From Clemson he went on to the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, SC and earned his Medical Degree in 1976. Continuing on with his education, he served a one-year internship and one year residency in OB/GYN in Greenville, SC. He went on to complete a one-year externship in Orthopedic Surgery at Ft. Knox Army Post in KY. In 1980 he began his General Surgery residency in Eisenhower Army Medical Center at Ft. Gordon in Augusta, GA. After completing his residency he joined the General Surgery staff at Womack Army Medical Center at Ft. Bragg, NC in 1986. His career continued at Pinehurst Surgical Clinic in Pinehurst, NC from 1986-2006. He also retired from service in the US Army Reserves as a Colonel that same year. He was very proud of his accomplishments in the medical field and also in the US Army, serving his country in places such as Grenada and was recalled to Active Duty during Desert Storm. During his military service he received the Army Service Ribbon, Army Commendation Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal/Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Meritorious Service Medal and National Defense Medal.

Richard was predeceased by his father, Robert E. Dales and younger brother, James M. Dales.

He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Sheryle “Sherry” S. Dales of Southern Pines, NC; one son, Richard “Rick” L. Dales, Jr.; daughter-in-law, Racheal C. Dales and three year old granddaughter, Harper Morgan Dales, all of Holly Springs, NC. He is also survived by his mother, Edna Stork Dales; brother, Fred Dales and sister, Debra Riddle, all of Columbia, SC. Also surviving is his older brother, Robert “Bob” E. Dales, Jr. of Summerville, SC.

A private service will be held at the family cemetery in Columbia, SC. A memorial service in Pinehurst, NC will be held at a date to be announced.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Clemson University Alumni Association would be appreciated. Everyone who knew Richard knew that his “blood ran Clemson orange”. His orange scrub suits and orange running shoes will be missed by all at the Surgical Clinic and Moore Regional Hospital.
