SHS JROTC honored

The Summerville High School Junior Reserve Officers Training Corp was honored Tuesday after winning second place in a cyber defense competition sponsored by The Palmetto Roost Chapter of the Association of Old Crows (AOC) in collaboration with Space and Naval Warfare Command (SPAWAR) Systems Center Atlantic and the Navy’s East Coast Engineering Center.

Palmetto Roost gave the JROTC six laptop computers for its training in defense against cyber warfare.

The cyber defense competition between schools in South Carolina was at the Citadel in April. The competitions were between universities and colleges and Charleston area high schools. The goal was to energize schools and students to focus on the development of technical skills in the area of networking and cyber security in preparation for careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

Students from each school comprised “Blue Teams” responsible for operating a small network while protecting the infrastructure from “Red Team” (hacker) attacks.

Blue Teams were scored for accomplishing administrative and business tasks while maintaining network/service availability (such as mail, database and web servers) as well as the ability to detect and respond to threats.

Students had to configure and protect their network and respond to business requests such as the addition or removal of services, and balance security needs against business needs.

Each school had a team of up to six student participants.

SPAWAR provided each school with mentors and advisors.
