Racquets for Recovery takes a swing at Breast Cancer

  • Friday, October 18, 2013

The members of the Pine Forest Ladies Tennis Association have a little attitude and a lot of heart.

Several members of the association are survivors or continue to battle breast cancer so the Racquets for Recovery benefit tennis tournament remains a top priority for the group. The annual event serves as a way to honor the fighting spirit of those ladies and as a mechanism that brings awareness and resources to a special fund set up at the MUSC Hollings Cancer Center.

The Racquets for Recovery event has raised $158,000 in the last eight years and the proceeds for this year’s event will continue to help the Hollings Cancer Center’s Comprehensive Breast Care Center meet the needs of its breast cancer patients. The fund assists the center in helping ease the burdens local patients experience in their day-today lives.

The ninth annual event will be held the first week of November at The Club at Pine Forest. It will include a USTA sanctioned tournament Nov. 1-3, a celebration and silent auction and a concert. Deadline to register for the tennis tournament (ID #700075713) is Oct. 27.

The Diamond and Denim Affair celebration and silent auction is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Nov. 2. This is open to all and admission is $30. Entertainment will be provided by Johnny Breeze and food by Eclectic Chef.

The Rockin’ for Recovery concert will begin at 7 p.m. Nov. 8 and feature musicians from the tennis community along with their family and friends. This is also open to the public for a donation of $10 for adults and $5 for children 12 and under.

Anyone interested in sponsorship, donating a silent auction item, or attending any of the functions can contact Shirley Hunter at shhunter@bellsouth.net.
