The Patriots’ volleyball team defeated an impressive AAA team Tuesday and picked up a key region win.
Fort Dorchester improved to 22-2 on the season with a 4-2 mark in Region 8-AAAA with wins over region foe Beaufort and 3-A opponent James Island.
The Patriots prevailed 25-8, 25-8 over the Eagles. Senior middle hitter Jasmine Quinn and junior setter Amanda Gluck led the Fort offense. Quinn scored with five kills, four blocks and two service aces while Gluck had three kills and three blocks for points.
Gluck was also key on defense, finishing with several digs. Seniors Rachel Phillips, Meghan Sanders and McKenzie Long also had a strong match defensively.
The Patriots then fought the Trojans, a team that with an 8-2 record in its region has already secured a home match in the first round of the playoffs, 25-14, 21-25, 26-24.
After falling behind early in the second game, the Fort mounted a strong rally but came up a bit short. That momentum, however, carried into the third game.
The decisive game was a back and forth affair that saw the score tied several times. Finally, Quinn broke a 24-all score with a kill and followed with a block for a point to secure the victory for the Patriots.
“We knew we just needed to keep our intensity up,” Quinn said. “Every ball that came to us we did what we could to work with it and set up a good pass. This team is so great. I love all my teammates and we are strong when we work together.”
Quinn again led the Fort offense with seven kills, six blocks for points and two aces. Junior middle blocker/hitter Monica Mack had eight kills and two blocks for points. Gluck and junior Kira Ozegovich also made several plays for the Patriot offense. Long, the team’s Libero, had more than 30 digs in the match and junior defensive specialist Katie Schneider had more than 20 digs. Gluck, Phillips and Sanders were other key defensive players in the match.
The Patriots traveled to Bluffton Thursday after press time looking to avenge an earlier loss to the Bobcats. The Fort hosts its final region contest of the season Oct. 22 when Summerville will make the short trip to North Charleston.
