Pinewood golf team extends streak

The Pinewood Panthers girls’ golf team picked up several victories last week to run its season record to 17-0.

The Panthers defeated West Ashley High School by a score of 182-275. Senior Reona Hirai led Pinewood with a 1 over 37. She was backed up by Olivia Coyle with a 47 and Michaela McAuley and Caroline Chester who both shot 49.

“It was not a very nice day to play golf as it was rainy and the course was very wet so our scores were actually pretty good,” Pinewood coach Greg Baechtle said. “The girls did a good job under difficult conditions.”

Last Thursday the Lady Panthers faced one of their toughest tests of the season against Wando High School. Earlier in the season the Lady Panthers were able to squeak out a two-shot victory on the Lady Warriors’ home course so Pinewood was expecting a tough match.

“Wando has a good team and they always seem to play well against us,” Baechtle said. However, the Lady Panthers put forward one of their best efforts of the year and were able to defeat the Lady Warriors by 20 shots, 172-192. Hirai again led the way with a 2 under 34. McAuley had one her best days of the season with a 43. Chester posted a 47 and Coyle rounded out the scoring with a 48.

“Michaela did a great job, she was the key to our win,” Baechtle said, “We knew Reona would give us a lead but Wando’s No. 2 player is very good and we needed to stay close in the No. 2 spot in order to have a chance.”

Hirai gave the Lady Panthers a 5 shot lead in the No. 1 spot and McAuley’s 43 meant the Lady Panthers were still up by a shot after the No. 2 players finished. As it turned out the Lady Panthers No. 3 and No. 4 players were able to win easily over their Wando counterparts and that enabled the Lady Panthers to coast to the win. Coyle defeated her opponent 48-59 and Chester took down her girl 47-55.

On Sunday the Lady Panthers captured the third annual Lady Panther Invitational at Legend Oaks. The Panthers topped a field of nine teams for the victory.

Hirai was the tournament medalist with a 76, McAuley had an 89, Coyle posted a 91 and Chester finished out the team scoring with a 94. The Lady Panthers shot a total of 350 to defeat Wando by 7 shots. Fort Dorchester finished in third place with a total of 383.

The Panthers wrap up their regular season play this week with a match against Wilson Hall and Hilton Head Christian.

Next Monday the Lady Panthers will conclude their season with the SCISA state championship that will be held at Pine Forest Country Club.
