Summerville used a balance offensive attack to hand Beaufort its second loss of the season.
Sophomore quarterback Sawyer Bridges completed a pair of touchdown passes during the 17-0 win. The Green Wave also had a lot of success rushing the football as it improved to 6-2 on the season with a 2-0 mark in Region 8-AAAA. Beaufort fell to 6-2, 1-1 with the loss.
“We played well in spurts but I’m just glad to win the game because Beaufort is a good team,” Summerville coach John McKissick said. “We gave our quarterback time to throw and he made some good passes. We were playing without one of our best offensive tackles but both our tailbacks ran the ball well tonight anyway.”
Each team had three offensive opportunities in the opening quarter but failed to score. Beaufort came the closest when Brady Cormier missed a 41-yard field goal that deflected off the left goal post.
Summerville took advantage of the miss on its next possession, driving 80 yards to score. Senior tailback Jacerie Ponder had a 20-yard run on the drive and capped it with a 35-yard pass from Sawyer Bridges for a 7-0 Green Wave lead with David Kennedy’s extra-point kick.
The Eagles had two possessions in the second quarter but both were defended. Cormier missed another 41-yard field goal attempt wide right with just more than five minutes remaining in the half.
Summerville capitalized again, this time with a 45-yard field goal by Kennedy.
Beaufort’s second possession ended with a punt from the Eagles’ 46 and the Wave took a 10-0 lead into the half.
Bridges completed 4 of 8 passes in the first half for 96 yards and the TD. Ponder carried 15 times for 75 of Summerville’s 130 first-half rushing yards.
Beaufort QB Ben Vaigneur completed one of seven pass attempts in the first half, a 26-yarder to tight end Stephen Baggett. The Eagles rushed for approximately 100 yards in the first half with Eric Blakely and Jeffrey Tookes combining for 17 carries.
Summerville added a 34-yard TD pass to Johnston McCurry in the second half and continued to keep the Eagles out of the end zone for the final two quarters.
Beaufort built some momentum with a long drive on its first possession of the second half, but then Summerville defensive back Chad Wood intercepted a pass to end the threat. Another Eagle drive spanned 70 yards late in third quarter but a fourth-down completion came up a yard short and the Wave took over on downs at its own 10.
“We didn’t make big plays,” Beaufort coach Mark Clifford said. “We played hard, but we didn’t play good football. We had some breaks and some opportunities but we didn’t make the most of them. Hats off to them. They have a good football team.”
In the fourth quarter, Summerville defensive back Kevin Dickinson put a big fourth-down hit on Baggett to stop the tight end just short of a first down. Then Summerville chewed up the remaining seven minutes of clock time with a drive deep into Eagle territory.
